In his interview with Business Daily, the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, announced the plan of the Greek government to attract digital nomads, through their new working visa policy called ‘Blue Carpet Policy’.
In his interview, Mr. Varvitsiotis stated that “With Blue Carpet Policy, we’re layering… an investment carpet for Greece”. According to the deputy minister, digital nomads, will not only create many benefits for the Greek economy but will also act as a way to spread innovation in the fields of cutting-edge technology.
Blue Carpet Policy facilitates the procedures for issuing work visas, for nomads willing to work from Greece. Two forms of Visas for students and businessmen have already been established, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now completing the procedures for the establishment of the special entry visa for digital nomads, which will be valid for one year with the possibility of renewal for another year.
The Nomads who wish to apply for this program must have a monthly income of at least 3500 euros and the necessary paperwork to ensure they will stay in Greece. The deputy minister added, “In no case are these people going to claim Greek jobs and there will be clear clauses to avoid such cases.”
The Greek government also seeks to upgrade the country’s telecommunications network through the installation of 5G networks. At the same time technology hubs will be financed through the funds of the Recovery Fund, but also through the European Budget. This will provide ample opportunities for digital nomads willing to work from Greece.
